Get the most out of your sauna!

1. Monitor yourself.

Everyone’s heat tolerance is naturally different and can vary from day-to-day depending on factors such as sleep quality and water intake. This means you may have a different response to a 30 or 45 minute sauna than someone you know or even compared to your last sauna session.

Your pre-existing conditions should never feel worse during a sauna so be aware of your comfort levels as well as your limits and adjust accordingly.

2. Nutrients Matter!

Vitamins and minerals play a direct role in your ability to tolerate heat meaning optimal mineral status will increase the health benefits you get out of your sauna. With improved heat tolerance you can stay in for longer while it remains safe, enjoyable and therapeutic.

Ensuring you consume a high quality, balanced diet with plenty of nutrient-dense foods will improve your heat tolerance and, by cause-and-effect, your sauna sessions and the degree of benefits you get from them.

3. Salt Is Your Friend.

Surprisingly to some, salt plays an important part in your hydration and helps to prevent complications such as muscle cramps. Salt losses can vary from person to person however exposure to excessive heat can deplete your salt level at an accelerated rate.

If you are a beginner in infrared sauna use, keeping your salt levels higher than you usually would is increasingly important. If you are an experienced infrared sauna user it is still recommended to increase your salt intake depending on how long your sessions are and how long you are in them for.

4. Make It Social.

Distraction can help with heat tolerance and building positive permanent habits so inviting a friend along with you to partake in your sauna session could be just what you need! At Aldinga Osteo & Co, bringing a friend makes it cheaper for both of you!

5. Pre-Heat Your Body.

By engaging in activities before your sauna such as exercise or a hot bath you are able to shorten the length of time it takes your body to warm up in the sauna, increase sweating, activate the lymphatic system and stimulate the heat shock proteins of the body. All these positive effects of pre-heating your body will increase the benefits of your sauna. Just keep in mind tip Number 1 and be mindful of your comfort levels.

6. Drink Water.

You need to replenish the water within your body, dehydration lowers the water in your sweat while increasing the relative minerals such as salt (remember tip. Number 3). With dehydration it also takes longer before you start to sweat in the first place and increases the risk of heat illness as well as your ability to remain in the sauna. All these factors may hinder the benefits you can reap from your sessions.

Consuming more water increases heat tolerance and helps the detoxification process so be sure to drink plenty of water the day before and the day of your session.

7. Rinse and Repeat.

Once your body has expelled many toxins through your skin (sweating) it is best to take a warm shower for a short period of time after your session and then switch to a cold shower to cool the body down. Showering will help remove these toxins and prevent them being reabsorbed. Therefore to super-charge your detoxification be sure to compliment your sessions with warm and cold showers which are provided within the practice.
